Biafra: DSS bundles APGA chief, Umeh to Abuja in pick-up

Senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) for Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh was on Thursday arrested by operatives of the Department of Security Services (DSS) in Anambra and flown to Abuja.

Sources say he was accused of being a supporter of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group agitating for a sovereign state of Biafra, but his family and supporters argue that his arrest was instigated by his political opponents.

Umeh was reportedly invited to the office of the DSS at Amawbia, Anambra State for questioning, and later taken to Abuja in a pick-up van.

This is coming on the heels of an Appeal Court verdict in favour of Umeh, which struck out the appeal filed by his opponent in the March 28, 2015 senatorial election, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ekwunife had approached the appellate court in Enugu to review the Tribunal’s judgment ofDecember 7 that nullified her election, but the Appeal Court turned her down, saying there “must be an end to litigation.”

The DSS reportedly told Umeh that they had received petitions that he was a supporter of the IPOB, and its activities.

Umeh had also recently accused former governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi, of plotting to stop him.

Umeh, told reporters at Ichida, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state during a campaign rally, that Obi and others were doing everything to stop him from the rerun.

He said, “Since 2012, Obi has been plotting my downfall. But God has been thwarting his evil plans against me because God knew how many battles I fought to sustain him (Obi) in office.

“I don’t bear any grudges against him, but he has continued to fight me, covertly and overtly.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ali Okechukwu, said he was not aware of Umeh’s arrest.

Oga Jamex, we are fighting corruption. No body is sacred. His long cap cannot save him, if it is true he is propping the so called Biafra struggle.
