Boko Haram raids army base, kills 4 soldiers

Just a day after Ripples Nigeria published a two-part investigative report on the human cost of Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram, the terrorist group has killed four soldiers in an ambush in Borno State and raided an army base in another attack.

One of the issues the story entitled, “Missing, Wounded, Killed in Action: Tracking the cost of valour in Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram”, raised played out in the latest attack as the soldiers were reportedly outgunned and forced to withdraw from the base, allowing their attackers take over the base which they looted and set on fire.

The ambush happened in Gubdori village and four soldiers were reportedly killed, five injured and four still missing.

The atrackers said to be part of  Abu Musab Al-Barnawi faction of the Boko Haram, were said to have opened fire on an army convoy heading to the small town of Gulumba in Borno State.

Abu Musab Al-Barnawi Is the son of the Ibrahim Yussuf, founder of the terrorist group. He broke away from the ABunakar Shekau-led Boko Haram.

The Boko Haram attackers however withdrew following military reinforcements.

In another attack at the military base in Wajirko village, reports from the villagers said that the insurgency group outgunned the soldiers and forced them to flee, which enabled them free entrance into the base which they plundered and afterwards set on fire.

An eyewitness report claimed that the soldiers had moved to a military base 40 kilometres away because the former  base was utterly burnt by the terrorists group.

The attack, as learnt left many casualties on both sides of the military and the Boko Haram group.

In recent weeks the Islamist fighters have intensified raids in areas near Lake Chad, stealing food from residents. They have also killed several civilians they accused of cooperating with the military.

There have been several reports of soldiers who got missing in action. Many of them have remained missing for years and nothing has been heard concerning them.

Rabi Ibrahim, mother of five, who spoke to Ripples Nigeria in the investigative story on Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram, revealed that her husband, Corporal Bello Ibrahim of the Artillery Regiment (333) has remained missing for about three years.
