Borno motorists, NURTW in showdown over military escort, ‘charges’

Published

on

Crisis is brewing between motorists plying the Maiduguri-Gamboru-Ngala road and the Borno State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over what the motorists described as improper coordination of military escorts and “obnoxious” charges by the union.

Already about 100 haulage, commuter-service, and NGO vehicles conveying passengers, commodities and workers to Mafa, Dikwa, Marte, Kala-Balge and Gamboru-Ngala, all along the route, were trapped for days from last Monday, in Maiduguri due to the withdrawal of the military escort by the union.

The conflict was coming on the heels of the investigation ordered recently by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) into allegation of extortion, declaring that escorts are free.

The escorts are provided by the Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole, and coordinated by the Borno State NURTW.

A Ward Head at Gamboru-Ngala, Mohammed Umar, told newsmen that the NURTW had gotten too much on their nerves and can’t bear it any more.
