Bournemouth shocks Man United

Published

Josh King scored a second-half winner against his old club as Bournemouth recorded a famous home win against Manchester United.

Norwegian striker King, who made just one League Cup appearance during his time at Old Trafford, slid home from close range after Marouane Fellaini had cancelled out Junior Stanislas’ early opener.

The win caps a remarkable week for Bournemouth who also beat champions Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge seven days ago.

The home supporters provided a raucous atmosphere ahead of the game were celebrating the opening goal within two minutes.

Stanislas’ corner kick got caught in the strong wind swirling around the Vitality Stadium and looped beyond David De Gea and into the net.

Stanislas then nearly turned from hero to villain when he gave possession away to Anthony Martial, but the Frenchman drove the ball wide with only Artur Boruc to beat.

United did force an equaliser midway through the half when Fellaini scrambled the ball home from close range after Boruc had parried Memphis Depay’s shot.

United, already without nine first-team players, suffered another injury blow when Jesse Lingard was forced off and he was replaced by Andreas Pereira.

Bournemouth re-took the lead nine minutes into the second half when Matt Ritchie’s low corner was met by King, who pulled away from his marker and slotted home beyond De Gea from eight yards.

The victory lifts Bournemouth up to 14th and three points clear of the relegation zone while United missed the chance to move level with leaders Manchester City and remain in fourth place.
