Breakdancing to become an Olympic sport in 2024 as Paris seeks approval

Breakdancing is set to become an Olympic sport in 2024 if the proposal by Paris Olympics organizers is granted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Under new IOC rules first introduced for the Tokyo 2020 Games, Olympic host cities can hand-pick sports and propose them for inclusion.

And approval is more likely if the proposed sport is popular in that country in order to add to the Games’ appeal.

The 2024 Games will be hosted by Paris, and its organising committee has said the four sports — also including surfing, skateboarding and sport-climbing — would reflect the French capital’s identity.

The committee added that the sports would help take the Games out of stadiums and into the streets.

The organisers said they wanted to deliver a Games that were “in keeping with the times and inspire new audiences and attract young people.”

Meanwhile, Skateboarding, surfing and sport-climbing will all be making their debuts in the 2020 Tokyo Games.

It will then remain the Breakdancing, which is very likely to be approved ahead of the 2024 Games by the IOC.
