Unai Emery has been sacked by Arsenal about a year and half after the Spaniard took over from former manager, Arsene Wenger.

This is coming a day after the Gunners lost 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, which was their seventh outing as a team without a win.

Although Arsenal are close to landing qualification for the last-16 stage of the competition, Thursday’s defeat was the Emirate Club’s longest winless run in 27 years – since February 1992.

Emery, who previously led Paris St-Germain to the French league title and won three Europa Leagues with Sevilla, was appointed in May 2018, succeeding Wenger.

Arsenal will be managed temporarily assistant and former Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg, according to a statement of the club, in which it was also stated that the decision to let Emery go had been “taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.”

“We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward,” the club added in the statement.

“The search for a new head coach is under way and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”

Arsenal finished fifth in Emery’s first season in charge.

The 48-year old is the third managerial dismissal in the English top flight this season, after Javi Gracia and Mauricio Pochettino departed Watford and Tottenham respectively.
