Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who has been having a running battle with President Goodluck Jonathan has finally dumped his party; the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and even publicly tore his membership card of the party.

Obasanjo tore the card in the presence of party members from ward 11 in Abeokuta North local government, said he is no more a politician, but would prefer to be an elder statesman.

The former President was addressing members of the PDP at his Presidential hilltop mansion in Abeokuta who came to confirm whether he has been expelled from the party or not.

Obasanjo said he was done with the PDP and ordered the leader of the delegation who is his ward chairman, Alhaji Usman Oladunjoye to tear his (Obasanjo’s) PDP membership card in public amid cheers from those present.

Obasanjo, had over the weekend raised the bar of his attacks on his estranged political son, accusing President Jonathan of scheming to sway the outcome of the March 28 election in his favor, and if he fails, was ready to plunge the nation into chaos.

Obasanjo, who quit as chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) in 2013, also denied allegations by the Jonathan administration that he was plotting to head an interim government.

The Obasanjo-Jonathan political ‘soap opera’ of rivalry has gradually eaten deep into the fabrics of the PDP ahead of the general elections.

Few hours after Chief Obasanjo officially announced his exit from the party, the Ogun State chapter of the party has announced his expulsion from the PDP.

Chairman, Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih, said former President Obasanjo’s exit from the party was not a loss to the PDP, and that they would not miss him.

Anenih spoke with State House correspondents shortly after attending a meeting of party chiefs with President Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He told reporters, “He (Obasanjo) has the right to leave any party and he has the right to join any party. He is a Nigerian. Why should we miss him? To us leaders, it is not a loss”.
