The Oyo State House of Assembly on Monday impeached the deputy governor of the state, Mr Rauf Olaniyan from office.

Olaniyan who was elected in 2019 on a joint ticket with the current Governor, Seyi Makinde on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) recently dumped the party for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

His impeachment which was pronounced during plenary, might also be connected to the fact that the Assembly is populated by members of the PDP who are aggrieved by his defection.

Following the panel’s recommendation, the lawmakers declared during Monday’s session that they had impeached the deputy governor.

This was after a review of a report of the seven-person panel formed to look into claims made against the deputy governor was adopted.

The panel report was read by the Majority Leader of the House, Sanjo Adedoyin from Ogbomoso.

Some weeks ago, Olaniyan asked the State High Court, Ibadan, to restrain the State House of Assembly from going ahead with the impeachment plot against him.

In a letter of impeachment served on the deputy governor by the House, the lawmakers accused him of financial recklessness, gross misconduct, and insubordination among others.

In his response to the allegations, Olaniyan accused the lawmakers of carrying out Governor Seyo Makinde’s agenda.
