European champions, Real Madrid have sacked Julen Lopetegui as manager after just 14 matches in charge.

This is coming a day after the team fell to a 5-1 thrashing to rivals Barcelona in their first El Clasico of the season at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The Spaniard succeeded Zinedine Zidane in June, but have led the team to earn 14 out of a possible 30 points in the league this season and have taken only one from their past five matches.

A club statement said “there is a great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid” and “the results obtained to date”.

Lopetegui, 52, will be “provisionally replaced” by ex-player Santiago Solari, who is coach of B team Castilla.

It is the second time Lopetegui has been sacked this year having been dismissed by Spain two days before the World Cup.

Real are Champions League winners for the past three years.

But following their run of defeat in the league, Real are now six points above the Spanish top flight’s relegation places, and seven behind leaders Barcelona.
