UK PM May faces contempt charges over failure to publish Brexit legal advise

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May has suffered another defeat over the next steps she intends to take in her bid to secure a Brexit deal with the European Union.

May according to reports experienced another symbolic defeat as her moves to wring concessions from Brussels on a key sticking point in her deal were defeated by a majority of 45 votes on Thursday.

Reacting to May’s recent set back, Professor Anand Menon, director of the UK in a Changing Europe academic think tank, said: “It damages her strategy in the sense that it might give the EU some pause for thought because they will be a bit concerned that the majority she thought she had is sizzling away.”

May’s rejection makes it less likely she will secure changes to the controversial “backstop” mechanism to avoid the creation of a hard customs border in Northern Ireland after Brexit.
