British Airlines to face ‘tsunami of job losses’

The General Secretary of the British Airline Pilot’s Association, Brian Strutton, has disclosed plans to retrench 3,000 staff as it seeks to slash cost due to the global health crisis.

Strutton made the announcement on Friday, saying: “We’re now seeing the start of what can best be described as a tsunami of job losses. I expect that all airlines are going to be making similar kinds of announcements now. And we’re going to be seeing an industry in crisis,”

He also criticized the lack of support from the British government to the industry stating that United States had given $25 billion to the US airline to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

“European governments are supporting their airlines. Why isn’t the British government doing the same?” Strutton said.

The UK Department of Transport has in turn advised the airlines to devise schemes to raise capital and financial support for their employees.

Meanwhile, there are 171,253 covid-19 cases and 26,771 deaths in the UK so far.
