Brussels train station reopens amid high security presence
The once busy Maelbeek train station, a target in the terrorist attack last month that claimed the lives of at least 32 people has reopened on Monday amid high security presence and the watchful eyes of passers-bye.
Armed soldiers and other security officials were seen patrolling the train station which is located near theEuropean Commission headquarters and was a target in the March 22 bomb blast which claimed at least 16 lives in a rush-hour train debacle.
Sources say some commuters who returned to the train station for the first time since the attacks last month were visibly moved as some recalled the blast which came after suicide bombers had earlier struck Zaventem airport departure lounge in attacks claimed by Islamic State.
“My heart is beating fast, I’m not feeling okay,” said passenger Hanane Attar, who felt the blast in her office above the station on the day of the attacks. “It’s quite emotional, very emotional.”
Many stopped to read messages such as “All together” and “The greatest of all is love” written on a wall left by victims’ families and survivors, who had visited the station in private.
