I didn't accuse Jonathan in person of corruption —Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was implementing critical reforms in the health sector to stem and reverse the brain drain challenge.

He said that this would be achieved by creating the right conditions at home, investing in infrastructure and vigorously fighting corruption and rot in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Osinbajo stated this Monday at the grand finale of the 60th anniversary celebration of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State.

While noting that poor state of development in the country’s healthcare system had greatly undermined the sector, the vice president emphasised that the present administration remained determined to reverse the rot.

According to him, “We now have an incredible opportunity to fight hard to win back our best brains, and to give emerging generations of our medical personnel a new reason to believe in their country and its possibilities.’’

Osinbajo said the Buhari administration was focused on fixing the problems in the health sector and other sectors of the economy, by continually investing in infrastructure.

He added, “We have also made our health policy clear: We want to offer affordable, accessible and qualitative healthcare to all Nigerians and others irrespective of social status and location.

“At the heart of this vision is our goal of providing basic healthcare to all Nigerians, as this will cater to over 70 percent of healthcare needs. Our Primary Healthcare Revitalization Programme was personally flagged off by Mr. President at Kuchigoro, a suburb of Abuja, last year.”

Speaking about the Federal Government’s policy in improving tertiary healthcare system in Nigeria, Osinbajo said, “UCH is one of the initial eight tertiary health facilities that the Buhari administration will be upgrading, through the investment of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).’’

He cautioned that revamping the system would require a lot of commitment from both government and the private sector.

“Revamping Nigeria’s broken health system will not happen overnight. It will take time and effort and sustained political will. But I can assure you that we have started that journey, and we will see it to the end. We will do all within our power to make this a reality. But Government cannot do it alone,’’ Osinbajo said.

He commended the management of the hospital for adopting the Public Private Partnership initiatives of the Federal Government in many areas of service delivery, while emphasizing the need to explore alternative financing mechanisms to improve infrastructure and quality of service.

Earlier, the vice president had inaugurated the Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu Geriatric Rehabilitation Centre at the hospital.

Dignitaries at the event include Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; his Ondo State counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, Health Minister, Prof. Isaac Adewole; founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, representative of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, the first Professor of Medicine in Nigeria, Emeritus Prof. Theophilus Ogunlesi.

Why won’t we have brain drain when there is no enabling environment for our medical experts here at home . The best medical experts in the world are Nigerians but they prefer to work outside the country.

And mind you, whose fault is it? Even our own medical doctors don’t believe in themselves, most of them as well traveled out for medical care. So what are we talking about? Lack of competence also affects them.

Then it boils down to the education system of Nigeria, who are the lecturers of medicine in our higher institutions and do they have the potency and equipment to develop and produce quality medical experts in Nigeria?

You never can tell for sure, following what Buhari faced with the health sector earlier this year, a reasonable president will do his beat to improve his country’s health care. I don’t want to assume this is a lie bro

I’m impressed by what Buharibis currently planning to do with Nigeria’s health care. Our health workers are up to the task, but lack of equipments have made them appear incapable

Don’t be impressed until you see actions ad results, Buhari has promised Nigerians more than he has given us. For now, I’ll consider this another promise yet to be fulfilled

Day in to out, the federal government is always giving new promises and won’t fulfill a any of them. If Buhari truly had plans for these hospitals, health workers and doctors would be taken seriously and they will be respected by the government.
