Again Buhari extends tenure of defence, service chiefs

The tenure of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Air Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff have been extended by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari gave the approval for the extension in a statement on Monday released by the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali.

The ministry Public Relations Officer, Colonel Tukur Gusau, said in the statement that Buhari extended the tenures after he “carefully reviewed the ongoing military operations across the country.”

The statement however, failed to specify the duration of extension.

Following the development, General Gabriel Olonisakin appointed as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Vice Admiral Ekwe Ite-Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), and Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar as the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), on July 13, 2015, will continue in office.

Based on the Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, the appointments of the service chiefs are tenured for two years, but could, at the pleasure of the president, be extended in so far as they have not reached the retirement age of 56 and/or attained the maximum length of service.

The tenure of the service chiefs ought to have expired on July 13, 2017, however three of them got one-year extensions last December and were expected to step down by December this year.
