Buhari: Lean cabinet in the offing

Published

on

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to make real his vow to cut the high cost of governance following his request to the Senate for approval to appoint 15 advisers.

Buhari’s letter, which was read in the Senate by the Senate president, David Mark, is his first correspondence to the National Assembly since assuming office last Friday.

The outgone president, apart from a bloated cabinet, maintained a large retinue of aides, including about 25 advisers, which his critics said amounted to waste of national resources.

Buhari’s appointments would be the second for the new president who only named his spokespersons and chief of protocol on Sunday.

Though the letter did not disclose the identities of the would-be advisers and their designations, Buhari would be scoring some points against his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, should he stop at 15 advisers.

“It’s going to be a lean government; I doubt he’ll have 42 ministers like Jonathan but he must have at least 36 (for the number of states) as prescribed by the constitution, though it does not specify whether they have to be senior or junior,” an adviser in the ruling APC was quoted as saying.
