Speculations are rife that President Buhari will nominate Mohammed Barkindo as the next OPEC secretary general.

Sources close to government disclosed Thursday that the former helmsman at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is almost sure of getting Mr President’s nod for the exalted position.

“We are putting Barkindo forward for the job of OPEC secretary general because he has the required qualification and experience,” a government official said, asking not to be named.

OPEC is shopping for a replacement for Abdullah al-Badri, elected acting secretary general in December and who will serve out his full terms in July.

Barkindo led the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2010. The corporation is currently undergoing what the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu calls a ‘reorganisation’.
