As part of measures to reduce cost of governance, President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, announced a 50 per cent slash in his salary and that of his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The president’s decision to take a pay cut was conveyed to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the State House, Nebolisa Emodi.

With this, Buhari and Osinbajo will earn half of what former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Namadi Sambo, earned.

The current annual remuneration of the President of Nigeria as published by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is N14, 058,820.00. This means Buhari, henceforth, will earn N7, 029, 410 a year or N28, 117,640 in four years

The letter to formalize the process, read: “I write to forward the completed IPPIS registration form of Mr. President and to draw your kind attention to Mr. President’s directive that only 50% of his salary be paid to him.”

Ripples had reported Friday that had Buhari stated that there was no need to procure such expensive cars when there was nothing wrong with the one he is presently using.

He preferred the ones he inherited from Jonathan. “I don’t need any new cars. The ones I’m using now are just fine,” a source at the briefing quoted the president as saying.

This is a welcome development, not necessarily because of the money involved, but because it demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice for the change we desire to see.

This is quite impressive because national assembly might take a queue from this and if this is done, it will reduce the cost of governance.
