Buhari undergoes surgery

Respite has come the way of a nine-month-old boy named Buhari Muhammad whose penis was cut off by his jealous step-mother.

According to the Director-General of the state Child Rights Protection Agency, Mrs Mariam Kolo, the young Buhari has undergone a successful surgery.

Mrs Kolo told newsmen in Minna on Friday that the first corrective surgery which was carried out at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, Niger, was part of a series of surgeries that the boy will undergo even as he is responding well to treatment.

“He was operated upon by four neurologists and he is responding to treatment. “Several other tests will still be conducted to prepare him for the next operation,’’ Kolo said.

Recalling the ugly incident which happened to Buhari when he was barely a month old in Dafe community, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger in June 2016, the 17-year-old step-mother of the victim identified as Bara’atu Muhammad said she did what she did because she was jealous and also wanted to get back at Buhari’s mother who was always fond of abusing her.

The suspect who is currently remanded in Minna prison may be sentenced to death by hanging according to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana who revealed that the suspect was still held, pending the conclusion of investigations.

“Under the Police Criminal Law, the suspect is an adult, she is above seven years; therefore, she can be convicted and hanged for the offence,” he said.
