Buhari, Wike discuss insecurity in Niger Delta

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Monday met with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed-doors at the Presidential Villa.

Wike’s meeting with the President lasted for about an hour and no details of their interaction were disclosed to media men who had waited anxiously to feed on the outcome of the parley.

Last week, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo played host to another governor from the Niger Delta region, Mr Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State. The interactive session which had stakeholders in the oil industry in attendance dwelt largely on fashioning ways to curtail the rising wave of crime threatening the operations of oil companies operating in Bayelsa State.

The Niger Delta Avengers, a group alleged to have close ties to fugitive ex-militant, Tompolo, has reportedly wreaked havoc on the operations of oil companies, shutting in nearly 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Chevron has been the worst hit.

Ripples Nigeria has, however, gathered that governor Wike’s parley with the Commander-in-Chief may have centred mostly on the upsurge of militancy in the Niger Delta. Though a bit removed from the current theatre of activity, there are growing concerns that the renewed insurgency could threaten the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) investment located in nearby Bonny, Rivers State.

It is also speculated that both parties may have ceased the moment to discuss the spate of cult killings in the state, the inconclusive State and National Assembly elections, and the potentially dangerous cold war between former governor Rotimi  Amaechi and the incumbent.

Governor Wike, while refusing to take questions from journalists, spent time exchanging  banters with them.
