Buhari’s govt begins clampdown on authors of hate speech on social media

Nigeria security agencies have been directed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to start clampdown on Nigerians propagating hate speeches, especially those who do that through the social media.

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, gave the order on Thursday, during a meeting of the National Security Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister added in the statement made available to newsmen that special attention must be paid to notable Nigerians in the efforts to tackle the problem.

The statement read, “The Honourable Minister expressed the need by the relevant security agencies to as a matter of urgency tackle the propagation of hate speeches especially through the social media particularly by some notable Nigerians.”

According to the statement, the minister had also hinted during the meeting that in order to address the various security challenges facing the country, that the Armed Forces is currently synergizing with other security agencies through intelligence sharing and joint operations.

Dan-Ali further noted that in conjunction with the Office of the National Security Adviser, that his ministry in compliance with the presidential directive for the establishment of National Commission on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the country, has commissioned a committee to work out modalities to transform the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons to a national commission.

The minister was further quoted to have said that the Military Pension Board had updated its data payroll and ensured financial savings for the government, a development according to him, which was made possible following the Military Pension Verification Exercise conducted in all the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, during the period under review.

In attendance at the meeting were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Usman; Director-General, National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Abubakar; and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
