Buhari’s Return: CAN suspends Day of Mourning

Published

on

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has suspended plans to hold a Christian Day of Mourning this Sunday.

A statement by the National Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, regretted the effect of the suspension in the face of the preparations that might have been made by different Christian assemblies for the day.

CAN nevertheless, called on Nigerian Christians to remain careful and watchful, saying the suspension was due to “misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and subsequent security concerns”.

The National Executive Committee, NEC of CAN had at a meeting on February 23 scheduled to hold the day of mourning on March 19 but Vanguard learnt yesterday that security agencies felt concerned about the development as it was claimed that it could lead to untoward development.

Sensitivities that going on with the programme could raise questions as to why CAN waited for President Muhammadu Buhari to return to office before staging the programme were also raised. Upon such, Vanguard learned that the CAN president decided to suspend the programme which Rev Asake said was to mourn “the death of thousands of Christians murdered by religious insurgents.”
