Aisha Buhari, has rubbished the claim by Governor Ayodele Fayose that she cannot travel to the United States (US), owing to her involvement in the Halliburton scandal.
The Ekiti state governor, Fayose had severally challenged the wife of the President to prove her innocence in the Halliburton scam by travelling to the US.
Fayose insisted that she was the person allegedly indicted by a US Court for transferring $170,000 to indicted US Congressman, Williams Jefferson, in the Halliburton scandal.
But the Nigerian First Lady, on Wednesday evening arrived in Washington DC on a week-long visit and is billed to attend a number of events in that country.
It is reported that Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC acknowledged that Mrs Buhari arrived on a British Airways flight from London.
While Mrs Buhari has refuted in strong terms that she was not involved in the US scandal, Fayose has insisted that she was indeed, the ‘Aisha Buhari’ that was actually mentioned in the Halliburton scandal.
Nigerian First Lady, it is learnt, is expected to attend meetings at the George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and will also be hosted by the United States Institute of Peace, in collaboration with Voice of America, as well as attend the 25th anniversary celebration of Zumunta Association USA Inc. during her visit.
Counsel to the president’s wife, Mary Ekpere-Eta of Mary Ekpere & Co, Legal Practitioners had written a letter dated June 22, 2016, to Governor Fayose, demanding a retraction of the governor’s statement that the president’s wife was involved in the Halliburton scandal, threatening legal action if Fayose fails to retract within five days.
But in the letter dated July 8, 2016, Mike Ozekhome, Fayose’s counsel affirmed that the statement made regarding the involvement of Mrs. Buhari in the Halliburton scandal was “correct and justified in law, having regards to a court judgment convicting one Mr William Jefferson for bribery in the Halliburton case.”
On July 20, Aisha finally filed a suit against Governor Fayose for claiming she was involved in the Halliburton scandal.
