Burkina Faso bans beauty contest for women with big backsides

Published

on

Days after an advert showing two fully clothed women with exaggeratedly large behinds provoked an outcry on social media, the government of Burkina Faso has banned the Miss Bim Bim beauty contest for women with big backsides.
“Our role is to do everything to avoid damaging the image of women,” said Minister Laure Zongo in a statement, adding that social media criticism had persuaded her to act.
The government says the annual contest for women with big buttocks which is now in its third edition, is sexist and not an ideal event to be promoted.
But the organisers of the even think otherwise, as Hamado Doambahe, the brain behind the event said it is aimed at promoting a more positive body image for African women and also encourage fashion designers to use African costumes.
