BURKINA FASO: French soldiers killed in raid to free foreign hostages

French forces have set free two French tourists, identified as Patrick Picque and Laurent Lassimouillas in northern Burkina Faso during a military raid that cost the lives of two soldiers.

The French presidency which confirmed it on Friday said their release was secured through a military operation conducted on Thursday night in the north of Burkina Faso, BBC reports.

According to reports, the Frenchmen disappeared in the remote Pendjari National Park in Benin where they had been on safari while their local guide was found dead.

French Minister for the Armed Forces Florence Parly identified the soldiers as Cédric de Pierrepont and Alain Bertoncello, both with the French Navy Special Operations Forces deployed with Operation Barkhane.

President Emmanuel Macron congratulated the French armed forces for the liberation of the hostages.
