Burundi: Coup plotters surrender

Leader of the coup plotters in Burundi, Major General Godefroid Niyombare on Friday said they have decided to surrender in the face of the onslaught by troops loyal to the President, Pierre Nkurunziza.

He told Reuters, “We have decided to surrender,” and added that troops loyal to the president were approaching him.

Government spokesman, Gervais Abayeho said that General Niyombare, is presently “still on the run, his whereabouts are not known to us.”

Loyalist troops have arrested at least three leaders of the failed coup amongst who are

a police general and two army generals, including former Defence Minister Cyrille Ndayirukiye.

The coup leaders’ spokesman, Venon Ndabaneze, confirmed to AFP by phone that organisers of the coup had decided to surrender when loyalist troops arrested him, deputy coup leader Cyrille Ndayirukiye and another senior figure among the mutineers.

    Coups still happening in this day and age. This Burundian saga is getting more interesting….

    @ Don Lucassi, coups should be expected when leaders intend to perpetuate themselves in office. There should be some form of revolution of course.
