BURUNDI: Heavy floods claims 6 lives, destroys property

No less than six people have lost their lives after flooding occasioned by heavy rains caused havoc in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.

The overnight rainfall caused heavy flooding that triggered landslides and caused widespread damage in the city with residents seeking dry land by walking through muddy floodwaters in Buterere, northwest of Bujumbura.

In his comments, the African nation’s vice president Gaston Sindimwo said; “torrential rains and strong winds struck several provinces last night. In the northwestern town of Mabayi, a landslide smothered several houses, and rescuers found five victims”.

Continuing, Sindimwo that; “it is a real disaster. Several other people were injured and we have so far counted 162 destroyed homes”.

Flooded roads in the capital of Bujumbura also caused the death of a soldier who died when heavy rain swept through Kinama neighbourhood during the night.

The flooding in Burundi is coming a day after Namibians were told to brace up for the worst flooding in history after authorities warned that this year’s wet season will bring significant submerging to the most densely populated areas of the country.

Authorities warned in a statement that the magnitude of flooding expected in the northern central regions of the country is likely to surpass that of 2011, which saw the highest level of flooding in Namibia’s recent history.
