CAF Champions League: Rangers, Rivers United advance to first round

Reigning champions of Nigeria Professional Football League Rangers International have booked a place in the first round of the CAF Champions League after playing a 0-0 draw against Algeria’s Jeunesse Sportive de Saoura in their preliminary round, second leg tie on Sunday.

The home team created a number of goalscoring chances in the encounter but were frustrated by the visitors’ goalkeeper who put up a fine performance at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium.

The Enugu side played 1-1 in Algeria in the first leg last week, and thus have qualified with their away goal. They will next face Egyptian giants Zamalek in the first round.

Nigeria’s other representatives in the CAF competition, Rivers United, defeated Mali’s AS Real Bamako 4-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Bernard Ovoke put the home team ahead with a penalty in the 29th minute, before Esosa Igbinoba added the second on 57 minutes following a beautiful pass by Ivorian striker Guy Kuemian.

Ovoke got his second of the game from the spot again on the hour mark, before Igbinoba fired home the fourth seven minutes before stoppage time.

The Pride of Rivers will now face Al-Merreikh of Sudan in the next round of the competition.
