CAF CL: Rivers thrash Al-merrikh, Rangers suffer defeat

Nigeria’s two representatives at the CAF Champions League, Rivers United and Rangers International, both had opposite experiences at their round of 32 first leg fixtures on Sunday.

While Rivers had a good day at home, Rangers had their chances of advancing to the group stages dealt with a huge blow away in Egypt.

Rivers United brightened their chances of advancing after defeating Sudan’s Al-merrikh 3-0 at their home ground in Port Harcourt.
A first half brace from Ivorien forward Guy Kuemian (15th and 18th minute) and another brilliant effort from Esosa Igbinosa (five minutes before stoppage time) gave the Pride of Rivers a comfortable win.
They will play to seal their place in the next round of the competition in the second leg which will be played at the Al-Merrikh Stadium, Omdurman next week.

Nigeria champions Rangers International suffered an away defeat against Egypt’s Zamalek, as they conceded three unreplied goals at the El Salam Stadium in Cairo.

The chances of Rangers reaching the group stage are slim, as the Flying Antelopes have an almost impossible task of overturning the 4-1 loss in the return leg of the tie.

Stanley Ohawuchi scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute for Zamalek, before two quick goals in the 29th and 31st minutes went in respectively by Hossam Salama and Ayman Hefni.

Zamalek later made it 4-0 before Rangers’ Bobby Clement secured an away goal for his side seven minutes before full time.

Rangers will host the return leg next week.
