President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad says it is not yet time to begin to talk about his relection ahead of next year’s general elections of the continental football governing body.

Ahmad, who became head of CAF in March 2017, said he would let the public know when the time is right.

The 60-year-old football chief from Madagascar refuted reports that he was already campaigning ahead of the 2021 elections, saying the coronavirus pandemic was a more important issue at the moment.

Reacting to the reports via his Twitter handle, Ahmad said he was solely focusing on the fight against the COVID-19 which has halted all football activities.

“Today, several media announced my application to a second mandate of @CAF_Online’s President,” Ahmad wrote on his Twitter handle.

“I am fully focused on the #Covid19 crisis management. When I’ll make my decision, I will let you know.”

Meanwhile, Amr Fahmy, who was dismissed as CAF’s general secretary in April 2019 after accusing Ahmad of corruption and sexual harassment, in December 2019 told BBC of his candidacy for the CAF presidency.

“I will start my campaign by visiting Sudan and Ethiopia in February, I am beginning in those two countries because they, along with Egypt, were the first three members of CAF,” he told BBC Sport.

“My grandfather Mourad Fahmy was one of the founding members of the CAF and he was general secretary just like my father was too. They served African football and it’s my time to do the same but this time from the president’s chair.”

Ahmad unseated Cameroonian, Issa Hayatou, who was in office for 29 years.

Fahmy could be his main challenger if he finally makes his intentions to run known.
