CAF Secretary General El Amrani resigns

Less than a fortnight after long-serving President Issa Hayatou was dethroned by Ahmad Ahmad, the secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Hicham El Amrani, has resigned.

The 37-year-old El Amrani, who has served in the position at the continent’s football body for six years, said in a letter to football associations that he would be departing on Monday, but gave no reason for his decision.

At the elections in Ethiopia on March 16, 70-year-old Hayatou, who had served as President of Caf for 29 years, was ousted by Madagascar’s Ahmad; while six of Hayatou’s allies on the body’s executive committee also lost their positions.

Meanwhile, the new president, Ahmad, chaired a meeting with his staff at the CAF headquarters in Cairo later on Sunday. And during the meeting, Ahmad announced he had accepted the resignation of El Amrani.
