CAF withdraws hosting rights of U-17 AFCON from Madagascar

Madagascar has lost the hosting rights of the 12th edition of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew the rights.

According to the notice Friday on the official website of the topmost football body in Africa, the decision was made following the reports of the CAF inspection teams.

“The CAF Executive Committee unanimously decided (with the exception of the President of the Malagasy Football Federation) to withdraw the hosting rights of the Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2017 from Madagascar,” the statement read.

“The CAF Secretariat will launch a new bid for applications within a limited period (until 30 January 2017) for the selection of a new host,” it added.

The tournament, which is scheduled to take place from 2nd to 16th of April 2017, is a biennial international youth football competition organized by CAF for players aged 17 and below.

The qualifiers for the competition were played between June and October 2016. At the end of the qualification phase, seven teams (Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Niger) joined the hosts Madagascar.

The semi-finalists of the tournament will qualify for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup which will hold in India later in the year.

It is worthy of note that the Nigerian U-17 team failed to qualify for the tournament after being eliminated by Niger Republic, and so, will be missing in the actions come April.
