A military court in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, has sentenced Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, the leader of Cameroon’s English-speaking separatist movement known as Ambazonia and nine of his followers to life in jail.

Reports say during proceedings, the lawyers representing the defendants in court accused the judge of bias and withdrew from the proceedings.

Tabe and nine members of his movement, who had been arrested in Nigeria in January 2018 and deported back to Cameroon, were later convicted of rebellion and other charges.

Cameroon’s English-speakers say they have been marginalised for decades by the central government and the French-speaking majority.

The English-speaking separatists also argue that they are marginalised by the bureaucracy and school system in the majority French-speaking country.
