KILLINGS: CAN cries out over fresh plot by suspected herdsmen, says 218 killed in Plateau

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has told President Muhammadu Buhari what he must first do before seeking a second term in office.

The umbrella body of Christians in the country, said that President Buhari should suspend his re-election bid, restore sanity to the country, ensure the release of Leah Sharibu, the remaining Chibok girls and other abductees from the captivity of the Boko Haram terrorists, before taking about seeking for a second term in office.

This was contained in a statement released by CAN President Rev Dr Samson Olasupo Ayokunle’s special assistant on media, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, on Tuesday, while commiserating with the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) as it conducted a mass burial for the two priests and parishioners killed by the Fulani herdsmen in Benue State recently.

The statement read in part, “CAN calls on President Muhammadu Buhari not to forget his 2015 campaign promises including fighting insecurity and keeping Nigeria united and upon which Nigerians overwhelmingly voted for him.

“CAN is disheartened to note that criminal Fulani herdsmen, bandits, kidnappers and other hoodlums have reduced Nigeria to a Banana Republic. This development is unacceptable and we call on all well meaning people anywhere in the world to join hands in praying for the deliverance, freedom and liberty from this self inflicted bondage.

“CAN asks President Buhari to suspend his re-election bid until he restores sanity to the country while ensuring the release of Leah Sharibu, the remaining Chibok girls and other abductees from the captivity of the Boko Haram terrorists”.

Similarly, the Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, The Most Rev. Dr. Charles Hammawa, also on Tuesday called on Nigerians not to support the Buhari-led administration for lacking “legitimacy and sincerity of purpose.”

He made the call at a requiem mass held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral, Jalingo, in solidarity with the burial of the two Catholic priests, and 17 others.

He said, “These continuous killings of innocent people, while our elected leaders look the other way is an act of betrayal, an act of blasphemy against God (or Allah).

“It’s a blasphemy for our elected people to allow the killings of human beings as if their lives did not matter. The federal government must rise up to protect all citizens without bias, for every human life matter and no life is more important than the other.

“The present government of President Muhammadu Buhari lacks legitimacy and sincerity of purpose and people should not support such government that lacks legitimacy.”
