Carabao Cup: Title holders Man Utd knocked out by Bristol City; Chelsea reach semis

Title holders Manchester United were stunned by Championship side Bristol City in a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash on Wednesday night

Korey Smith scored an injury-time winner for the hosts which earned them a 2-1 victory and sealed their spot in the semi-finals of the competition – for the first time since 1988-89.

After an even first hour, Bristol City go ahead when Joe Bryan’s left-foot strike went across goal on 51 minutes before Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was making his first start since April, equalized for the Red Devils just 7 minutes after.

The game was heading to extra time before Smith struck in the 93rd minute to spark jubilation in the parked stadium.

Elsewhere, Premier League champions, Chelsea also defeated Bournemouth 2-1 to advance to the last four.

It was Alvaro Morata who scored the injury-time winner for the Blues, as Willian’s opener 13 minutes into the game was cancelled by Dan Gosling’s curled effort on the stroke of 90 minutes.

Morata, who came in as a substitute, sent Antonio Conte’s side into the semifinals with a 91 minute finish from Eden Hazard’s backheel.

As it stands, Bristol City, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal are competing in the semifinal of the competition.
