The trial of Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki over alleged false assets declaration was on Thursday adjourned indefinitely by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) following cross-appeal filed before the Supreme Court by both Saraki and the Federal Government.

According to the CCT chairman, Danladi Umar, adjournment of the case was necessary to allow for the outcome of the appeals filed by Saraki and the Federal Government in respect of the case.

When the case resumed on Thursday, the defence led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), had informed the tribunal that the Supreme Court had fixed March 15 for the hearing of the pending appeals.

He had therefore prayed for an adjournment of the matter, but the prosecution objected his prayer.

However, Umar dismissed the prosecution’s objection and held that “the tribunal has decided to adjourn sine die (indefinitely) pending the outcome of the appeals at the Supreme Court.”

Saraki had to return to CCT, which had earlier acquitted him of all 18 charges leveled against him by the Federal Government, following the December 12, 2017 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which restored three out of the 18 counts.

The trial resumed on February 6, 2018. However, both Saraki and the prosecution had since filed separate appeals to the Supreme Court challenging the parts of the Court of Appeal’s judgment they are uncomfortable with.
