CCT orders arrest of suspended CJN Onnoghen, to be arraigned Friday
Provoked by the absence of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen for trial, the prosecution has applied for his arrest.
Onnoghen who was supposed to appear at Tuesday’s proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) was also absent, provoking the lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN) to orally apply for his arrest.
The application was granted by the CCT chairman, Danladi Umar who issued a bench warrant to the police and Department of State Security (DSS) to arrest Onnoghen and ensure he is brought to trial on Friday.
While arguing on why the embattled CJN should be arrested, Umar quoted sections 6(1) of the Practice Direction of the CCT and 396(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
He opposed the application of the lead defence counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) urging the three-man tribunal to hear all pending applications.

He maintained that the tribunal could not raise any objections until he took his pleas and he (Onnoghen) had not taken the plea.
The application by the prosecuting counsel was opposed by the lead defence counsel.
Onnoghen is currently standing trial before the CCT over non-declaration of assets. He has since been suspended by President Muhammadu Buhari and subsequently replaced by Tanko Mohammed.
