Champion! Nadal wins 16th Grand Slam title in New York

Top seed Rafael Nadal grabbed a 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory over Kevin Anderson in US Open final at Flushing Meadows, New York to lift his 16th Grand Slam title.

The Spaniard, who is winning the US title for the third time, had earlier won the French Open in June to make it two Slams to his name this year, a feat he last achieved in 2013.

The other two Slams – the Australian Open and Wimbledon – were won by rival, Roger Federer, which makes it a tie for them both.

“To close the Grand Slam year with a win in New York, brings me to a higher energy because the crowd is unbelievable here,” Nadal said after his triumph.

“It is a very special two weeks for me, but first I want to say congratulations to Kevin who has come back better than ever after some tough injuries. You are a great example to all the players on tour.”

Anderson was featuring in his first Grand Slam final, and doubles as the lowest ranked man ever to contest a US Open final.

Speaking also after the game, Anderson said: “I want to congratulate Rafa. I know we are the same age but I feel I have been watching you my whole life.

“You are an idol of mine and you are a great ambassador for our sport.

“I want to say thank you for the support from back home in South Africa, to my wife and my brother, but also my parent back home. You built me a wall in my backyard and taught me to fight for everything.”

Nadal was finally handed a $3.7m winner’s cheque in a small envelope.
