CHAN Eagles suffer 1-0 defeat in Benin Republic

In the first leg of their African Nations Championship qualifier, home-based Super Eagles fell 1-0 to the Squirrels of Benin at the Stade de L’Amitie in Cotonou on Sunday.

After a goalless 89 minutes of play, Nigeria’s Azeez Aremu fouled Marceline Koukpo inside the penalty area to hand the Squirrels a chance to grab their first ever win against Nigeria.

A penalty was awarded by the referee and then converted by the captain Seibou Mama who sealed the first leg win for the hosts.

The Eagles have been camping in Kano ahead of the tie and will host Benin Republic in the reverse fixture next week at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Nigeria are currently trailing on aggregate and the next game will determine if they are going to feature at the finals next year, as the winner of the die gets automatic qualification.

The 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) will hold between January 11 to February 2 in Kenya.
