In apparent retaliation of the alleged murder of an indigene by an overzealous policeman, angry youths in Ohafia, Abia State, went on a rampage and burnt a police station in the area on Saturday.

The youths, who are protesting the killing of their kinsman identified as Friday Arunsi by the policeman also burnt the residence of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), the police quarters and patrol vehicles, and freed all detainees at the police station.

Eyewitnesses told journalists the policeman had smashed a car which was offloading goods at Eni Njoku road, Ebem Ohafia.

An argument ensued and the policeman who was in the company of two of his colleagues pulled his gun and shot the deceased leaving him in a pool of blood.

The trigger-happy policemen fled the area as sympathizers took the victim to a hospital in the area where he was reportedly rejected.

He was later taken to the Federal Medical Center, (FMC), Umuahia, where he died.

When news of his death filtered in, the youths quickly marched to the police station, released all the detainees and burnt the station and patrol vehicle.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ene Okon, who confirmed the killing, warned citizens against taking laws into their hands.

He assured the people of the community that the policeman and others involved in the incident would be prosecuted for murder. Watch the video below:
