Chapecoense win first match since air crash tragedy

Brazilian League side Chapecoense won their first game Sunday night since the Plane crash incident in which most of the team lost their lives in November, 2016.

They defeated Inter de Lages 2-1 in the League of which they emerged champions last year, with goals from Niltinho and Wellington Paulista at the Arena Conda stadium.

The club have since the disaster signed 22 new players and appointed a new manager, with the Inter de Lages tie being their second competitive game since then. In their first game, last Thursday, the new team drew 0-0 with Joinville in the Primeira Liga – which is a different competition.

As it can be recalled, the first-team squad, as well as coaches and backroom staff and journalists, were travelling to Medellin for the first leg of the Copa Sudamerica final when the tragedy struck on November 29.

The plane crashed as it approached the city, killing 71 people in total, and just three players survived the crash.

And following the disaster the Brazilian side were awarded the Copa Sudamericana trophy – a move backed by Colombian club Atletico Nacional, who were supposed to face them in the said final.
