Chelsea closer to title with win over Southampton

With five games remaining, English Premier League leaders Chelsea edged closer to the title with a 4-2 victory over Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Gary Cahill got the goals that extended the Blues’ advantage over second-placed Tottenham to seven points.

Only five minutes into the game, Hazard opened the scoring with a low strike before Oriol Romeu tapped in the equalizer about 20 minutes later.

Cahill’s header after 45 minutes made 2-1 before Costa nodded in his first in the game on 53 minutes and a well-taken second a minute before stoppage time.

And in stoppage time, Ryan Bertrand scored a fine header for the Saints against his former club to make the scoreline 4-2.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte said after the game: “It was a good win. Today I have to be pleased with the effort of my players. It wasn’t easy after a tough game against Tottenham. Southampton have good players and play good football.

“My choice was right for the game against Tottenham and the game today. It’s not easy to make these strong choices.

“To score at the end of the first half was very important. I was confident. I was seeing the team show a great will to win. In this part of the season, it’s not easy.

“We must be confident for the future. It’s important to look at ourselves and not the other [Spurs].”

Meanwhile, Tottenham can reduce the gap back to four points if they secure a victory at Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Chelsea will travel to Everton on Sunday as they continue in their quest for the title this season.
