Chelsea sign former Man City goalkeeper Willy Caballero

English Premier League champions Chelsea have signed former Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old Argentine was released by City when his three-year deal expired at the end of June.

The former Boca Junior shot stopper arrived in England from Malaga in 2014 and played 26 times in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side last season.

“I am very happy to join the champions of England,” Caballero told official Chelsea website.

“I am looking forward to meeting the guys and helping the club achieve more success.”

Caballero will now strenghten the team after the sale of second-choice goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, 30, to Bournemouth in May.

The club’s technical director Michael Emenalo added: “We are very happy to have Willy on board. He knows the Premier League and is tried and tested at the top of the game.

“We have three experienced goalkeepers and we look forward to welcoming him to the club when the squad returns to pre-season training.”

During his time in Manchester Caballero won the 2016 League Cup final against Liverpool after his heroics, including three penalty saves during the shoot-out, helped City lift the trophy.
