Child labour accusations trail companies in DR Congo

Published

A report by human rights organisation, Amnesty International, into Cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo reveals that children as young as seven were working in dangerous conditions.

The report also say companies failed to do basic checks to ensure minerals used in their products are not mined by children while accusing Apple, Samsung and Sony as the biggest culprits.

The DRC produces at least 50% of the world’s cobalt which is a vital component of lithium-ion batteries but in a joint reply, the firms denied the claims saying that they had zero tolerance policy towards child labour.

According to Amnesty, miners working in the area face long-term health problems and the risk of fatal accidents.
