China accuses Trump of slander, denies claims over US Congressional elections

The People’s Republic of China has denied claims made by President Donald Trump who days ago said Beijing is trying to influence the US congressional elections.

Reacting to Trump’s comments in a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang accused the US President of slander and said Beijing does not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs.

“We advise the US to stop this unceasing criticism and slander of China,” said Geng. “Stop these wrong words and deeds that damage bilateral relations and the basic interests of both countries’ peoples.”

Trump had earlier remarked while addressing a UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting on Wednesday that Beijing was interfering in the November 6 mid-term elections because it opposes his tough stance on trade.

“They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade and we are winning on trade,” said Trump.
