China arrest, detain 9 over power plant collapse that killed 74 people

Chinese news agency Xinhua said on Monday that authorities have arrested nine people involved in a power plant construction project in the east of the country which collapsed last week killing 74 people.

Eyewitnesses say a crane collapsed, triggering the collapse of the entire construction platform in an incident which occurred on Thursday morning in Fengcheng, in Jiangxi province, during work on a cooling tower for a coal-fired power plant.

Reports say chairman of Hebei Yineng Tower Engineering, whose family name they gave as Zhang was among one of the nine people arrested.

Xinhua also said the nine were suspected of “major liability” in the accident and would face criminal charges, but gave no other details other than that the probe was continuing.
