CHINA: Deadly gas leak kills 18 coal miners

Tragedy struck in central China when a deadly gas leak claimed the lives of no less than 18 coal miners who died while on duty.

According to Chinese state media the deadly leak also claimed the life of the coal mine manager and others who attempted to save those trapped in the fumes.

The unidentified substance leaked out and also wounded another 37 mine workers at the Jilinqiao mine in Hunan province.

Investigators are testing the gas while police have detained an unspecified number of people in connection with the accident, Xinhua said.

Cai Yongheng, rescue team director, said rescuers had to carry oxygen tanks during the search for survivors.
