China detains 18 Australians for suspected gambling crimes

Chinese authorities have detained scores of Australians for suspected gambling crimes with China’s Foreign Ministry revealing that the case was still being investigated without giving any further details about the arrests.

Following the incident, Australia’s biggest casino company, Crown Resorts Ltd, revealed that China had detained 18 of its employees including three Australians.

China has launched a crackdown on foreigners in recent times as it could be recalled that in February this year, 93 people, including 50 foreigners, were detained on suspicion of drug use after police raided a party beneath a Shenzhen overpass.

Police removed 491 people from the scene after being tipped off that a large crowd had gathered there and that some were using drugs.
