Chinese leader gets right to rule indefinitely

China’s National People’s Congress has voted to abolish term limits, allowing incumbent leader President Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely.

Reports say Out of 2,963 delegates at the annual session of the National People’s Congress, 2,958 voted “yes” to changing the Constitution on Sunday.

The proposed amendment was announced last month and there was never any doubt it would pass as parliament is packed with loyal party members who would not have opposed the proposal to allow the president to prolong his stay in office indefinitely.

The removal of the presidential term limits from its constitution now gives President Jinping the right to remain in office indefinitely, and confirms his status as the country’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong died more than 40 years ago.
