Chinese leader Xi Jinping addressed African leaders at the China-Africa forum in Beijing on Thursday, reaffirming his commitment to deepening cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and investment with the continent.

The summit, attended by over 50 African leaders and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has already yielded a plethora of pledges for enhanced collaboration in various sectors.

“We are ready to deepen cooperation with African countries in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, trade, and investment,” Xi declared at the opening ceremony, held at the Great Hall of the People. He hailed China-Africa ties as being in their “best period in history.”

China, the world’s second-largest economy, has established itself as Africa’s largest trading partner, seeking to tap into the continent’s vast natural resources, including copper, gold, lithium, and rare earth minerals.

The country has provided billions of dollars in loans to African nations, facilitating the development of much-needed infrastructure. However, these loans have sometimes sparked controversy, as they have left governments with significant debt burdens.

Xi’s pledge to deepen cooperation comes as China seeks to strengthen its position as a key player in Africa’s economic development. The summit has already seen African leaders secure commitments for enhanced collaboration in various sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, mining, trade, and energy.

As the forum continues, attendees are expected to discuss ways to further solidify China-Africa ties, with a focus on mutual benefit and sustainable development. With China’s growing influence on the continent, the outcomes of this summit will be closely watched by observers around the world.
