Confederations Cup: Portugal edge Mexico to claim 3rd place

Euro champions Portugal took third place at the 2017 Confederations Cup after snatching a 2-1 extra-time victory against Mexico at Moscow on Sunday.

Portugal failed to make it to the final after suffering a semi-final defeat against Chile last week.

Andre Silva missed a penalty which would have put the Europeans ahead in the 17th minute, and Luis Neto later conceded an own goal early in the second half to put them on the trailing end.

Pepe however headed an equaliser in second-half stoppage time and Adrien Silva converted a penalty winner in an extra half hour which saw both teams reduced to 10 men by the expulsions of Nelson Semedo and Raul Jimenez.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was not fielded after the four-time Ballon d’Or winner flew home to see his newborn twins immediately after the semi-final defeat.

The final of the Confederations Cup will take place later on Sunday between World Cup holders, Germany and Copa America champions, Chile.
